I love making this easy milkshake with my kids, and it's such a simple yet fun treat for them. They love adding all the ingredients to the blender and watching them whizz!

And if your kids love their fruits, then try this Mango Lassi which is low on sugar but high on probiotics as it uses greek yogurt as one of the key ingredients!

Why this recipe works

I love this chocolate banana milkshake because it's such an easy treat, even your kids can help you make it. It's so easy to make it from scratch, and being able to know exactly what's in it. If you love chocolatey drinks, then you'll also love this Hot Chocolate Coffee.

The secret to a great thick and luscious milkshake is in the ratio of milk to ice cream. And I figured out how to make a really thick milkshake. More ice cream, less milk!

Ingredients you'll need

Ingredients for chocolate milkshake laid out on a white backdrop.
  • Chocolate Ice Cream: Use the best quality of ice cream you can get. I would also highly recommend for the best results, to use a full fat and real ice cream.
  • Milk: Use whole or full fat milk. Milkshakes aren't supposed to be healthy, so let's go all out with this one!
  • Banana: I love adding banana, because chocolate and banana is a such classic combination. Pro tip: freeze the banana, to make it even more creamy.
  • Chocolate Syrup & Whipped Cream: come one, we need these, don't we? 🙂

Favorite toppings

  • Syrups: Top with your favorite syrups, such as caramel, strawberry, or even a drizzle of hot fudge would be great!
  • Cookies: We all know crushed cookies make milkshakes so much better. My favorite would be oreos for this one!
  • Fruits: Top with sliced bananas and strawberries.
  • Candies: for a peanut butter flavor, add some Reese's peanut butter cups to the blender with the other ingredients. Or top with chocolate chips or m&ms, or both!
  • Roasted Nuts: a sprinkle of crushed almonds or peanuts would be great for a salty kick.

Top tips and recipe FAQs

  • Chill Your Glass: Put your glass in the fridge before making the milkshake. A nice and cold glass will keep the milkshake nice and cold too.
  • Best Quality Ingredients: Since this recipe requires only a few ingredients, use the best quality you can find.
  • Make it Thicker or Thinner: To change the consistency, you can add more or less milk.
  • Increase the Recipe Servings: If you want to make a bigger serving, simply double the ingredients.
What is the difference between chocolate milk and a chocolate milkshake?

Chocolate milk is just milk flavored with chocolate. But chocolate milkshakes are made with a base of chocolate ice cream and whole / fat milk.

How do you make a chocolate milkshake without ice cream?

You can add lots of ice, and use a frozen banana in the recipe, but I highly recommend adding ice cream because that's where all the flavor is!

What type of milk is used in a milkshake?

Whole or full fat milk is best for this recipe but you can also use skim milk. The consistency will, however, become a little thin.

Do you need a blender to make this milkshake?

Yes, but if you don't have a blender, you can also use a hand blender.
