I love this smoothie because it's super delicious, and tastes indulgent, yet is super healthy. I'm also obsessed with all things chocolate, so I love to add some cocoa to this coffee breakfast smoothie. Add these delicious banana muffins to your breakfast, and you know you'll have a great day!

If you're in the mood for something fruity, then try this excellent Mango Lassi made with only five ingredients and it's pretty healthy too!

Why this Recipe Works

This breakfast smoothie is not only tasty but is full of nutrition too. It's great for a quick breakfast on the go, and is a very versatile recipe so you can make it as you like it. This coffee smoothie is also naturally sweetened with banana and dates.

Dates are a great natural sweetener, and extremely nutritious and fulfilling too. Dates have high protein and iron, and should be included in our everyday diet. Want a kid-friendly breakfast drink? What Goes Into this Recipe

Ingredients for coffee banana smoothie laid out on a white cutting board.
  • Coffee: Use your preferred coffee. Cold brew, freshly brewed coffee, instant coffee, espresso powder, it all works great in this recipe.
  • Milk: Use any type of milk: full fat, skimmed, almond milk, etc all of them are great options in this recipe.
  • Banana: Sometimes I like to freeze the banana beforehand, and use that in this recipe. It makes the smoothie so creamy and divine.
  • Dates: Dates are a wonderful healthy and natural source of sweetness in this breakfast drink. Use any that you like, mejdool are a personal favorite of mine.
  • Cocoa & Cinnamon Powder: These are entirely optional, but add great flavor!
  • Nuts such as almonds and cashew nuts are a great option too!

How to Make It:

a collage of step by step photos on how to make coffee banana smoothie.
  1. Pour milk into the blender.
  2. Now add the prepared coffee.
  3. If using, add your cinnamon and cocoa powder. You can even add a few drops of vanilla extract if you like.
  4. Add a chopped banana (use a frozen banana for a more creamy version).
  5. Add pitted dates to the blender.
  6. Use a high powered blender to blend all the ingredients until fully combined. I highly recommend using a high powered blender, because it will blend the dates and all the ingredients beautifully. If you don't use a high powered blender, there may some chunks of dates left in your smoothie. If you don't have one, a good quality food processor or a nutribullet are excellent options too.
  7. Pour into your favorite serving glass, and enjoy immediately!

Optional Add Ins:

  • Peanut Butter: Add a tablespoon of peanut butter for some extra flavor and protein.
  • Vanilla or Coconut Extract: A few drops of vanilla or coconut extract will amp up the flavor of the smoothie.
  • Greek Yogurt: Add for extra creaminess!
  • Protein Powder: Add a scoop of your favorite protein powder.
  • Honey: for added sweetness
  • Ice cubes: Add a handful of ice cubes to make your smoothie cold and deliciously frosty.
  • Nuts of Your Choice: Add some almonds or cashew nuts for added nutrition!
  • Whipped Cream: for extra indulgence!
  • Chocolate Syrup: Add a drizzle of chocolate syrup on top for some extra sweetness!

FAQs and Expert Tips

How to Store Coffee Banana Smoothie

This smoothie is best served fresh, so that's what I recommend. However, it should keep well in the fridge for a day.

What Kind of Dates To Use

Use your favorite kind of dates. My personal favorite are mejdool dates.

High Powered Blender

I highly recommend using a high powered blender, because you need it to blend the dates properly. You may also use a good quality food processor or a nutribullet.

Use Ripe Bananas

The riper the bananas, the sweeter and more flavorful your smoothie will be. Bonus: freeze them to make it more creamy!
